What's a Hope Merchant?

I am a practitioner of a psycho-therapeutic modality called Internal Family Systems.

It's a fancy way of saying, we're all made up of a bunch of parts. Think of a junior high school band learning to play. You are the conductor at the front of the room, with all your clarity, calm and compassion, ready to lead the way.

But some of your band members are fractious, or scared, or wild, so  it's handy to have an assistant nearby telling your players, "hey if there were a better way to play your instrument, and I know what it is, would you be interested in learning it?"

That's what the hope merchant does in the IFS model.

We crack the door and let the light of possiblity in.

Maybe the best thing we can do right now, as the world spins out of control, is to crack open the door for as many people as we can, because when they see the light, and even walk toward it, our hope is kindled too.

That's the hope of the Firestarter, that I can be a midlife hope merchant for you. Letting et the light of possiblity in, even if the world goes dark.

Thanks for being here.

What lies on the other side of midlife is sometimes described by people in their 50's and 60's with glee. It's a freedom from fakery, people-pleasing and scrutiny. It's generous and communal. It's well-earned fun. We call this era our second mountain, and climbing it with integrity can...
How to Survive Uncertainty
Sam and I have an unusual lifestyle. I'm self-employed and he's a cowboy — like a real one who moves cows, brands them, feeds them and helps them have babies, if they need it.  He's not even posing in this picture. Just peak Sam.  For the past five years, we've spent time out west, specifically in Wyoming and New Mexico, where he's running ranches. Except for our menagerie of big horses, dogs ...
Taos Friend Camp Report
Our first-ever friend camp in Taos, New Mexico is in the books, and since people always ask, "how was it," I figured I'd share it here.  Yesterday, as my friend Jean and I were riding back to the Albuquerque airport, she played the TikTok I made back in February about Friend Camp. Listening to what I promised then, I gave myself a little high-five.  The vibe was spot on.  Friend Camp is (kind...
